Turn the page

christylashea.com

As I attempt to write this blog post, it is near midnight and the house is quiet. I’ll finally get to write, I’m thinking. While everyone is asleep… Everyone except my English Bulldog, Bobo, who is growling at the bedroom door. I’m not in the bedroom, and she can’t figure out why.

They say images are good when you’re writing a post. This picture was taken in north Georgia at Meeks Park. I love being near bodies of water. It’s calming. Now, the photo has nothing to do with why I’m writing tonight. But isn’t it pretty? Can’t you just hear the water traveling over the rocks? I took the photo during a walk back in the spring. I love traveling to the mountains. It’s good to go where the air is fresh and all of God’s creations can show off.

Y’all know that it’s been a hard year. I won’t get into details right now. We’ll save those details for another day.

Tonight, I just wanted to write.

Write to revive my corner of the world wide web. After reading old blog posts, I smiled at myself. Some articles are ten and fifteen years old. I was a voracious writer back then. Although I put on a good show, my confidence was weak. I was busy listening to everyone else instead of putting faith in myself. Instead of putting faith in what God had planned for me. Though the years may have been beneficial, as I learned a lot about the craft of writing, I have to wonder, what if I did this…? What if I did that?

Some of you may be saying, ah, ah ah… don’t do that. Don’t look back. And maybe you’re right.

So… what if we turn the page? Start a new chapter?

Are you wanting to start something new? Revive an old projects? I do. I’ve got ideas for books that need to be written. I’ve got plants to plant, weeds to pull, things to make and stuff to do. We’re not getting any younger, folks. Our day jobs aren’t going away. (I hope mine doesn’t… I need that paycheck!)

If we don’t follow our dreams now, when are we?

We can’t wait any longer.

Who’s with me?

I’m hearing crickets in the audience, but that’s alright. I’ll try to check back in with you so that we can hold each other accountable for our progress. Maybe you’re writing a book, too? Maybe you’re working on furthering your education? Maybe you’ve been trying to finish quilting a blanket or reviving your art skills. Whatever it is, let’s start now.

I need and I want to write again. Write more books, continue books in the series I’ve started. I wrote a blog post. So, what. It’s just a blog post.

I wrote. That is what matters.

Until next time,

Christy

It’s been a while…

There’s a song that starts out with these words it’s been a while. I love the song. It’s by a rock band and it’s a ballad/rocker song…

Of course the name of the band has completely left my mind at the moment. If anyone knows the band I’m talking about, feel free to supply me the information.

For me, it has been a while since I’ve written on this blog. It’s been about as long since I’ve written on a manuscript. 2012 proved to be a good year, full of changes and full of challenges for me. I believe it is the combination of these changes that caused me to lose my focus and to slip away from writing.

I miss writing. I have scenes in my head but when I come to the computer, nothing seems right. I keep telling myself that I can’t edit a blank page, yet, the page remains blank…

As we go into the new year, I’m optimistic that my old self will return. That I’ll rise early and write. That the issues I dealt with in 2012 will dissipate.

I’ve got a couple of goals that I’d like to meet as I face 2013… It’s been a while since I’ve done any of these things, so I’m hoping by stating them publicly that it will help me reach my goals.

OK, Here they are….

1)  Cook a meal every Sunday.  (We eat out during the week waayyyy too much. I’m hoping Sunday will provide togetherness for my family, and leftovers for Monday.)

2) Walk every day during my lunch break.  (I think the extra activity will help clear my mind and help take off some of the extra pounds I’m carrying 😉

3) Write something, anything, every day.  Perhaps I’ll blog here a day or so. Maybe I’ll blog once a month on http://www.thefaithgirls.com. Perhaps I’ll work on a new story.

Three goals…. That’s what I’d like to accomplish in 2013. These are the habits I want to make new and make a part of my life. What about you? Are you setting goals, or trying to make changes?

Keep Me Accountable – A Celebration!!

I’ve written just over the 21,000 word count mark on my manuscript. some of my writing buddies – a shout out to S.L. Morgan and Ciara Knight are kicking some major booty on their manuscripts!  They’re helping to keep me accountable as I chase after the same goal.

In other news, I’m thrilled to announce my BFF / crtique partner – Dianna Shuford – has finaled in the Finally A Bride Contest.  And the same week, learned she had a full manuscript request from another contest she entered. Woo-Hoo!!!  Congratulations, Di!!!!!

Keep Me Accountable – One Week Down

It’s been a busy week of writing as much as possible, keeping the story fresh on my mind and chatting with friends to keep me accountable. All in all, it’s been a good week of progress! I’ve added a prologue this weekend, that may or may not see the light of day in the final draft… Nevertheless, the internal editor is OFF and the writing is commencing.

While Lindi advises her first draft is full of dialogue, I’m finding I have to “tell” the scene first. Unless the scene is already vivid in my mind, I cannot get the dialogue on paper until the characters actions are clear in my head. This is a good example of how each of us works differently.

A very long time ago, I finished a rough draft in 3 weeks. Another time, it took 6 weeks. I’m hoping to repeat the past this month and have at least 50K down by the end of November.

My current word count is 10,911. That’s a great advance since I last posted!

Now it’s your turn to check in!

Keep Me Accountable – Magic Writing

photo from http://www.kids-pages.com/folders/colpages/Fairy-Tales/page8.htm

Hey, all!  It’s Day 3 for Nanowrimo and I’m going strong – as strong as can be squeaking by with about two hours writing time per day. My total word count is 3,550!  I already had Chapter 1 written, however when nano started, I started at Chapter 2. It’s going great.

It is hard to turn off the internal editor. I’ll admit, there’s a lot of “telling” going on. I’m forcing myself to “tell” the scene if I’m not seeing it clearly in my head. I just need to get it down to get on to the next scene and multiply those words.

However, in turning off that internal editor, I’m finding the process has organic qualities. Even though, I used plotter methods and am following my scene cards, what is produced in those scenes, is like magic. When I began Chapter 2, I needed my hero and heroine to meet. It ended up another character I hadn’t planned on appearing this early, made her debut and added a lot of fun to the scene.

And, more fun for me as the writer.

I’ll look forward to hearing from you and your progress! Any magic happening?

Keep Me Accountable: NANOWRIMO!!!

Today is November 1st and the first day of Nanowrimo. I will officially begin my push to write 50,000 words this month in just a couple of hours. If you are participating in this challenge, make me your writing buddy – I’m listed as christylashea.

I think I’m ready for this challenge. I’ve got a skeleton of scenes written to guide me through. If you’ve done Nano before and have any suggestions, please share!  We’re all about helping each other reach our goals around here!

Now, I couldn’t help share a couple of pictures from the last couple of weeks. Here, my daughter(6years) and son(22 months) share a nice treat during our recent trip to Jaemor Farms in Alto, Georgia. It’s just beautiful up there.

Here, I’m trying to get a picture of their beautiful gardens and these apple trees. I bought a half a peck of the Red Delicious. They were huge and very sweet!

Keep Me Accountable – Day 6

I’ve missed a few days of blogging writing progress. Unfortunately, today’s report isn’t any better. I’m in a mess of plotting and reworking Chapter 1 and finding I need more time than just an hour to work (that includes email/blogs/writing.)  Let me try to cram everything into that hour, plus a little dishwashing and clothes washing. Ah!  And, I just haven’t been in the mood to get up at 4am lately…. 4:53 maybe, but that’s 50 minutes I could’ve written – or done some of that other stuff 😉

This is a senseless post and I’m really just here to state my word count so you all can give feed back on yours.

Current word count 3,165.  Goal: 80,000

I hope you’ve had a better week than me. How do you push over your slumps???
